IBM FlashSystem V9000 achieves highest IOmark results to date with 1,600 VMs and 4,096 virtual desktops.

Boulder CO, January 16, 2015. IOmark and Evaluator Group announce new benchmark results for IBM FlashSystem V9000 for both IOmark-VM and IOmark-VDI, achieving 1,600 IOmark-VM’s and 4,096 IOmark-VDI instances.

IOmark-VM is a benchmark that certifies storage systems for virtual server results, while IOmark-VDI is a benchmark for virtual desktop workloads.  The measurement criteria for both are storage performance, with all storage workloads running on the tested storage system. The gating item for most workloads is the storage system performance.  IOmark measures and reports application specific storage workloads and the price per VM or VDI instance.

“As companies look to move enterprise workloads to all Flash storage systems, they need high performance and enterprise class data protection features,” said Russ Fellows, Senior Partner of Evaluator Group.  “The industry leading IOmark results achieved by the IBM V9000 are significant, setting new performance levels both for the number of VM’s and the number of VDI instances, combined with the proven enterprise features of the V9000.”

“This demonstrates IBM’s investment to be the leader in this area,” said Eric Herzog, Vice President, Product Marketing and Management, IBM Storage Systems and Software Defined Infrastructure. “It is our commitment to enable our clients to expand into new applications with a system that is a proven enterprise player.”

The IBM FlashSystem V9000 is a comprehensive all-flash enterprise storage solution. FlashSystem V9000 delivers the full capabilities of IBM FlashCore technology plus a rich set of storage virtualization features. FlashSystem V9000 delivers industry-leading value to enterprises along three dimensions: Performance, Economics, and Integration.

The IOmark benchmark results are audited to ensure uniform testing and reporting of results, enabling IT users the ability to compare products using metrics that matter, price, capacity and application performance.

The application mix for IOmark-VM, the virtual machine application server benchmark includes databases, webservers and Exchange mail servers plus hyper-visor operations consisting of a VM clone, deploy, boot, software upgrade, and storage migration between storage volumes.

The application mix for IOmark-VDI consists of standard windows desktop applications, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Internet Explorer, Windows Media player and other applications.

The IOmark-VM benchmark requires the following to achieve passing results:

  • Total test time is 1 hour, with a measured interval of 30 minutes
  • Seventy percent of response times for I/O’s must not exceed 20 milli-seconds
  • A minimum number of storage vMotion and VM clone operations must also be completed during a 1 hour test

The IOmark-VDI benchmark requires the following to achieve passing results:

  • Total test time is 1 hour, with a measured interval of 30 minutes
  • Seventy percent of response times for I/O’s must not exceed 30 milli-seconds

Evaluator Group is the developer of IOmark, which is available without charge to Evaluator Group IT end user premium subscribers. Vendors, performance testing labs and channel partners may purchase to use the tool in their lab and for publishing audited results. IT end users may purchase a discounted license. An evaluation license may be obtained for 30 days for internal trials.

IBM results are available at the IOmark website. For more information on IOmark-VM see the IOmark Concepts.
